The following are considered dental emergencies and may require immediate treatment at an A&E Department:
-
Bleeding that does not stop following a recent surgical procedure (for example, after a tooth extraction)
-
Increasing swelling causing difficulty with breathing and/or swallowing Damage to teeth or jaws following an accident
Please note that toothache alone is not usually considered a dental emergency.
Patients with toothache should not attend A&E unless accompanied by severe swelling, bleeding, or trauma. If you require pain relief while waiting to see a dentist, advice can also be obtained from your local community pharmacy.
Please note that standard NHS emergency dental charges may apply where relevant.
